Hexahydrate magnesium chloride, also known as water chlorite, is a colorless monoclinic crystal at room temperature, easily deliquescent, with a density of 1.56g/cm3 and a melting point of 712 ℃. It decomposes when heated in air and releases HC1 gas at around 118 ℃, becoming a chlorinated oxygen compound. At high temperatures, it decomposes into MgO and HC1.
